JIM McKENZIE
WEST COAST REALIST

Jim McKenzie lives and paints on Mayne Island. Born in New Westminster in 1953, he grew up in the Fraser Valley and studied art at the University of British Columbia, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1975.

Since his first one-man show in 1978, his career as a professional artist has spanned over twenty five years.  His paintings grace both corporate and private collections across Canada.

Jim produces original oil paintings on canvas: an entirely traditional medium, but with the innovative use of the airbrush, he creates the brilliantly coloured soft-edge style of realism for which he is known.

After exhibiting at several galleries in Vancouver and Victoria, Jim opened McKenzie Fine Art Gallery on Mayne Island in 1998 to show his work.

"To paint and live in such a spectacular landscape is a remarkable opportunity for an artist like myself. If, through my paintings, I can evoke in the viewer some indication of my response to the landscape, I feel my work is successful ."

Jim publishes Limited Edition Prints of his original paintings using archival pigments on artist's quality paper, ensuring a long-lasting, high quality reproduction. "Because it is a one-of-a-kind item, a painting that takes a lot of time to produce may actually be seen by rather few people. These prints allow my images to reach a far larger audience."
